VEPAA Philosophy and Background

The Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association (VEPAA) is the membership comprised of all elementary schools in the VSB.  The primary purpose of the association is to organize the extra-curricular (primarily after school) athletics and activities for our member schools.

The VEPAA’s governance is led by an elected board made up of VSB teachers, staff and school administrators.

Individual Sports such as cross country and track meets, each zone will determine which dates it will host its mini meets and zone meets.  Our District Cross Country meet takes place at Trout Lake in late October.

Fair Play Philosophy

The VEPAA actively supports the Fair Play ideals. The goals of our program are to provide all interested students with the opportunity to play, develop good sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation and quality of performance. The opportunity to develop these specific goals and self-esteem, will be provided within the controlled, friendly, competitive environment of our organized extramural leagues.

The VEPAA strives to align all policies with the VSB’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities Policy (Policy 17).

Where possible, students will be permitted to participate in any sex-segregated recreational and competitive athletic activities, in accordance with their gender identity. Due to issues of disclosure and safety, some students may wish to participate in a sex-segregated activity that is not aligned with their gender identity.

Trans students shall be provided the same opportunities to participate in any sex-segregated activities in accordance with their gender identity if they so choose.

The VEPAA plans its athletic activities around the Ministry of Education required instruction days, statutory holidays, and Pro-D days.  We make every effort to accommodate school and district calendars to make our events as accessible as possible to all students.  Given the constraints we are faced with, we are not always able to plan our events around the various religious holidays that families may observe on their own.  All extra-curricular sports activities and events are voluntary and not required by the school.

We humbly acknowledge that we are training and playing on the traditional, ancestral, unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Musqueam, Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh Nations. With this acknowledgement comes the commitment to engage in ongoing acts of reconciliation.
